As Top Hat continues on its UK tour, I’m excitedly waiting for it to arrive at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking and I want to share the joy that this musical brings when you watch it and hopefully persuade a few extra people to go and see it!
I love a traditional musical that brings a past era to life and Top Hat certainly does that. The music is some of the best that I have ever heard in a musical – thanks to the tremendous talent that was Irving Berlin. Some of the songs featured include: Top Hat, Cheek to Cheek, White Tie & Tails which featured in the original film starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In addition other classics from Berlin’s repertoire are included in the musical such as Let’s Face the Music and Dance and Puttin’ On the Ritz.
But the dancing is also beautiful and aptly performed by the cast, which in this touring production includes Alan Burkitt and Charlotte Gooch in the central roles of Jerry and Dale.
I should point out that I first went to see the show when it was at Wimbledon Theatre last August and fell in love with it then and I will give the show a proper review when it comes to Woking as I’m sure there are plenty of other reasons to go and see this lovely musical.
