Ian Kelsey and Patrick Robinson are set to bring the iconic roles of Andy Dufresne and Ellis ‘Red’ Redding to audiences at the New Victoria theatre as the production of the iconic film The Shawshank Redemption arrives in Woking next month.
Arriving at the theatre from the 9th to the 14th November, the production is a celebration of the 21st anniversary since the film’s release on the big screen. Based on the 1982 novella titled Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by the celebrated author Stephen King, the play examines injustice, friendship and hope.
The 1994 film starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of Ellis Redding.
Ian Kelsey (Doctors, Emmerdale) will be taking on the role of Andy Dufresne, a banker who has been given a double life sentence for the murder of his wife and lover and finds himself locked up in the notorious Shawshank penitentiary.
Joining him in the cast is television’s Patrick Robinson as Ellis ‘Red’ Redding. His previous credits include Casualty, Midsummer Murders and The Bill.
Unflinching in his protests of innocence, Andy strikes up a friendship with prison fixer Red and soon things take a turn for the better. But when warden Stammas decides to bully Andy while exploiting his skills for accountancy, a quiet and desperate plan begins to emerge…
The Shawshank Redemption is directed by David Esbjornson, whose previous credits include the West End production of Driving Miss Daisy starring Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones.
