Composer Will Todd and librettist Maggie Gottlieb’s 2013 version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland arrives at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre from the 5th to the 7th November.
The opera was met to great acclaim when it originally opened at the Opera Holland Park in 2013 and now makes its way inside for this new revival, which will celebrate the 150th anniversary since the book was originally published.
Alice is jolted from the boredom of school holidays by an encounter with a talking white rabbit – who persuades her to come with him to the mysterious world of Wonderland. Along her adventures, Alice meets a variety of interesting characters such as an exceedingly relaxed caterpillar and a grinning cheshire cat. But she learns that not all is well in Wonderland – the Queen of Hearts seems to enjoy chopping people’s heads off…
Mixing jazz, classical and opera music, Carroll’s book is turned into a fun and engaging production that remains faithful to the spirit of the book. Suitable for children aged five and above, this is an opera that children and adults will both enjoy.
The production will be conducted on all performances by Matthew Waldren in a cast that will include: Fflur Wyn, Robert Burt, Victoria Simmonds, Magid El Bushra, Keel Watson, John Lofthouse, Maud Millar, Daisy Brown, Samantha Price, Joanna Marie Skillett and Fleur de Bray.
Performances of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will take place from the 5th to the 7th November at 6pm, with an additional performance taking place on the 7th at 2pm.
