Review roundup: The Lorax @Old Vic Theatre

The Lorax officially opened at the Old Vic Theatre yesterday – so do the critics think it is worth taking your kids along to watch? 

The Telegraph: *** Dominic Cavendish wrote: “peel back the lush fronds of the piece’s lyrical wit, and it’s a desert in terms of drama.”

The Stage: **** Mark Shenton found the production: “two hours of rough magic storytelling.”

London Theatre 1: ***** Jennifer Daley commented: “The show includes all that is wonderful about theatre: Great acting, catchy songs sung by talented singers who intersperse rhyming dialogue, smartly choreographed dancing, colorful and creative costumes, and a storyline that satisfies both young and old.”

Whatsonstage: **** Michael Coveney called it a: “colourful and brilliantly innovative staging of David Greig’s adaptation.”

The Evening Standard: *** Fiona Mountford wrote:”It’s too odd and complex for younger children and not sufficiently three-dimensional for adults.”

Culture Whisper: **** “there’s a deft balance between heart-felt morals and full-on theatricality in Max Webster’s directon”

Time Out: **** Andrzej Lukowski said: “The Lorax is a great big, bright, fun dollop of family theatre.”

There Ought to be Clowns: “Director Max Webster has served up a treat
with such charm no panto could ever compete.”

British Theatre Guide: Philip Fisher commented: “judging by the rapturous standing ovation at the end of the performance, the Old Vic could well have a hit on its hands.”

Mature Times: Robert Tanitch described it as an: “inventive, humorous and lively production.”
