Review Roundup… Red Velvet @Garrick Theatre

This production of Lolita Chakrabarti’s play directed by Indhu Rubasingham has already wowed critics when it appeared at the Tricycle Theatre and in New York – has it worked its charm once again?

The Stage: *** Mark Shenton wrote: “Rubasingham’s production is full of affectionate demonstrations of the acting styles of the day. But there are some supporting performances here which are a little over-ripe and over-projected even in this context.”

The Guardian: **** Michael Billington was enthusiastic saying: “It is Lester’s fire and fury, however, that brands itself on the mind.”

The Reviews Hub: *** (and a half) Scott Matthewman found that: “The lightness of Chakrabarti’s script as she imagines the backstage discussions softens the blows of some the opinions expressed, encouraging us to laugh at the ridiculousness of some of the language and attitudes.”

A Younger Theatre: Rebecca Jones said: “Lolita Chakrabarti’s play is a story that is crying out to be told.”

British Theatre Guide: Philip Fisher commented: “Red Velvet is not only an important play both politically and historically, it is also great fun, not to mention a wonderful showcase for the popular Adrian Lester.”

Time Out: **** Tom Wicker wrote: “Chakrabarti’s writing is funny and fiery.”

Overall verdict: this revival could not have come at a better time with the debate over the Oscar nominations. Adrian Lester delivers a strong performance, supported by a great cast.
