This new production of Joe Penhall’s play will see David Haig joining Daniel Kaluuya and Luke Norris in Matthew Xia’s production, which has now extended its run until the 2nd July.

Christopher has been confined to a psychiatric ward for a month. He wants out. The problem is he still thinks oranges are blue. His doctor, convinced he needs help, wants to section him. The senior consultant thinks it’s all a question of culture: at home in Shepherd’s Bush Christopher will be amongst ‘people who think just like him’. And besides, it costs taxpayer money to keep Christopher in care.

Penhall examines the intersection between  mental health provision and race in a play that originally premiered at the National Theatre in 2000 and went on to win an Olivier Award for Best New Play.

The production features designs by Jeremy Herbert, lighting by Adam Silverman, sound by Carolyn Downing and movement by Joseph Alford.

David Haig’s recent stage credits include Guys & Dolls (West End), Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me (Chichester Festival Theatre) and The Madness of George III (West End and Theatre Royal Bath).

Blue/Orange sees the return of Daniel Kaluuya to the Young Vic following A Season in the Congo in 2013. His other theatre credits include: Trelawny of the Wells (Donmar Warehouse), Oxford Street, Sucker Punch (Royal Court).

Meanwhile, Luke Norris also returns to the Young Vic following his appearance in A View from the Bridge. Other recent credits include: Hamlet, As You Like It (RSC); Orpheus Descending (Royal Exchange); Antigone, The Kitchen (National Theatre).

Joe Penhall’s previous work includes the hit musical Sunny Afternoon, Birthday, Haunted Child, Dumb Show and Pale Horse.

Matthew Xia returns to the Young Vic after his Genesis Future Director Award-winning production of Sizwe Banzi is Dead, The Sound of Yellow (a Taking Part Production) and his work on Blackta as Jerwood Assistant Director. He is Associate Artistic Director at Manchester’s Royal Exchange where he directed Sondheim’s Into the Woods, Christmas 2015.
