Former Doctor Who actress Billie Piper will take on the title role of Yerma in Simon Stone’s production of Federico García Lorca’s original story.

Making her Young vic debut in the role, Billie Piper will play Yerma – a woman whose inability to have a child gradually tears her life apart.

Simon Stone has written and will direct a contemporary version of the Spanish playwright’s masterpiece, which follows the story of one woman’s desperation to become a mother but is met with indifference by her husband and provokes a desperate action.

Yerma is Simon Stone’s first original piece for the UK. He is one of Australia’s leading directors, whose previous credits include his production of Thyestes which was performed at Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers in Paris in 2015. In 2013 he collaborated with Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett, directing Reunion, a short film which premiered at Berlinale. His adaptation of The Wild Duck which won a Helpmann Award and a Sydney Theatre Award played at Barbican Theatre.

Meanwhile, Billie Piper’s previous theatre credits include: Great Britain, The Effect – Oliver nomination for Best Actress (National Theatre); Reasons To Be Pretty (Almeida) and Treats –  Evening Standard Theatre nomination for Best Actress (Garrick).

Further casting and creative team have yet to be confirmed.
