Mike Bartlett’s new play has officially opened at the Hampstead Theatre, what have critics been saying about it?
The Guardian: ****Michael Billington wrote: “Even if the play is not perfect, it is excellently directed by James Macdonald and acted with great finesse.”
WhatsOnStage: **** Holly Williams found that: “Wild becomes a wild ride indeed: one that will leave you utterly gripped, at the edge of your seat… and one that will, I hope, allow the reader forgive such clichéd turns of phrase.”
The Telegraph:**** Dominic Cavendish said: “Even if it’s not wholly successful, Wild confirms him as a playwright impressively willing to wrestle with the big questions of our time and, in its closing stages it delivers the year’s most sensational coup de théâtre.”
Evening Standard: ** Henry Hitchings wasn’t so impressed saying: “The production’s wizardry can’t compensate for the limpness of the writing.”
The Times: **** “It’s not a journey, or a story. It’s a ride, as in funfair. It’s the Mike Bartlett Wild Ride ride.”
The Upcoming:**** “Wild is a piece of theatrical machinery that knows no limits and truly flips the story on its head.”
Time Out: *** “a short, maddening, enjoyable three-hander that takes the basics of the Edward Snowden story and then goes somewhere very strange with it.”
Variety.com: “Wild feels like a stage direction with a play tacked on.”
London Theatre.co.uk:*** “Designer Miriam Buether delivers a coup de theatre that provides an astonishing denouement to the play.”
There Ought to be Clowns: “nail-bitingly intense and breathlessly exciting, go Wild.”
