The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden will present Àlex Ollé’s new production of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma, with performances from the 12th September until the 8th October.
This new production will be conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera House and will star Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva in the title role of Norma for and Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja singing the role of Pollione.
They are joined in the cast by sung by Italian mezzo-soprano Sonia Ganassi and the role of Oroveso is sung by British bass Brindley Sherratt. The Jette Parker Young Artists Korean tenor David Junghoon Kim and Russian soprano Vlada Borovko sing the roles of Flavio and Clotilde respectively.
The priestess Norma loves Pollione, leader of the occupying force suppressing her people, and has borne two children by him. But Pollione’s love has withered, and he now loves Norma’s fellow priestess Adalgisa. Meanwhile, the people urgently look to Norma to lead their rebellion.
Norma will mark the role debuts for both Sonya Yoncheva and Joseph Calleja.
There will be a live cinema performance of the production taking place on the 26th September at cinemas across the world as part of the Royal Opera House Live Cinema season.
