The former Eastenders star is to return to the stage in a new UK tour of Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight, famously made into the classic 1944 film starring Ingrid Bergman.
Considered to be one of the greatest thrillers of all time, Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight will return to the UK stage in 2017, opening at the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham on the 6th January 2017.
As well as Kara Tointon, the cast will include Rupert Young (BBC’s Merlin) as Jack Manningham and Keith Allen as Detective Rough.
While Jack Manningham is on the town each evening his wife Bella is home alone. She can’t explain the disappearance of familiar objects, the mysterious footsteps overhead or the ghostly flickering of living room gaslight – is she losing her mind? Does the terror exist in her imagination or are dark secrets living in her home? The surprise arrival of retired Detective Rough leads to a shocking discovery that will shake her respectable Victorian marriage to its core.
Kara Tointon has appeared in many West End productions including playing Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion and starring in productions of Alan Ayckbourn’s Absent Friends and Relatively Speaking.
Rupert Young is best known to television audiences for his role as Sir Leon in BBC’s hit series Merlin. His stage credits include roles in High Society at the Old Vic and While the Sun Shines at the Bath Theatre Royal.
Keith Allen’s stage credits include: The Homecoming (Trafalgar Studios), Smack Family Robinson (The Rose, Kingston), Comedians (Lyric Hammersmith) and Treasure Island (Theatre Royal Haymarket).
This new UK touring production will be directed by Anthony Banks, whose previous credits include Dennis Kelly’s DNA (National Tour); Bryony Lavery’s Cesario and More Light, Lucinda Coxon’s The Eternal Not and Michael Lesslie’s Prince of Denmark (National Theatre).
The 2017 tour will see the production visit: Birmingham New Alexandra (6th-14th January), Aylesbury Waterside Theatre (16th-21st January), New Victoria Theatre Woking (23rd-28th January), York Grand Opera House (30th January- 4th February), Theatre Royal Brighton (6th-11th February), Cambridge Arts Theatre (13th-18th February), Sheffield Lyceum Theatre (20th-25th February), Richmond Theatre (6th-11th March) and New Theatre Cardiff (14th-18th March).
