Review Round Up: Things I Know to Be True, Lyric Hammersmith

The Frantic Assembly and State Theatre Company of South Australia co-production has opened at the Lyric Hammersmith. Here is what critics have been saying:

The Guardian: *** “South Australia’s Geordie Brookman and Frantic Assembly’s Scott Graham, as joint directors, transform the stage from an empty space to a suburban garden and synthesise text and movement.”

The Independent: **** “Genuinely haunting and fervently recommended.”

Broadway World: ** “It is perhaps the script’s politics that grate more than the issue-driven plotting.”

WhatsOnStage: *** “This is observant and the play is often perceptive and funny.”

The Upcoming: **** “This show perfectly nails the affection, the humour and the excruciating anguish of a family’s relationship. It’s as claustrophobic as a tight hug.”

British Theatre Guide: “a play that starts out as a very funny comedy before transforming into a psychological drama that aspires to be a mini-tragedy.”

The Telegraph: ***** “Bovell offers us a portrait of family life in all its gory reality – and it is an absolute gem.”

Evening Standard: **** “While the storytelling occasionally feels schematic, there’s an intelligent attentiveness to the little details of domesticity, some sour and others honeyed.”

Traffic Light Theatregoer: “There are times when, like some rebellious family member, we even felt resentful we were somehow being subjected to a gentle but insistent  indoctrination in “Things I Know To Be True” which made us more obstinate in our analysis rather than eveloping us in the story.”

Things I Know to be True will continue to play at the Lyric Hammersmith until the 1st October. For more information and to book tickets visit: http://www.lyric.co.uk/whats-on/production/things-i-know-to-be-true/
