The detective writer Georges Simenon escaped France at the end of World War II, moving to the USA to start a new life. Along with his American wife, the writer settled at Shadow Rock Farm in Lakeville, Connecticut. Years later, he wrote La Main, a psychological thriller set in a New England farmhouse.

David Hare took the original play and created a new play in which the action unfolds in Connecticut in 1969.
