Taking to the stage from the 13th January, this is the first revival of George Benjamin and Martin Crimp’s opera.
This co-commissioned production with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse and The Royal Opera, is the first full-length opera from British composer George Benjamin and British playwright Martin Crimp.
Directed by Katie Mitchell, Written on Skin is a contemporary opera that premiered at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2012 and draws upon a 12th-century Occitan legend about the troubadour Guillem de Cabestaing.

The cast will include Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan and American soprano Georgia Jarman share the pivotal role of Agnès. British baritone Christopher Purves will sing the Protector while British countenor Iestyn Davies sings Angel1/The Boy. British mezzo-soprano Victoria Simmonds sings Angel 2/Marie and British tenor Mark Padmore sings Angel3/John.
Written on Skin features designs by Vicki Mortimer, lighting by Jon Clark and will be conducted by George Benjamin.
