NEWS: BAFTA Nominations Announced

Nominations for this year’s BAFTA Awards have been announced today, with musical film La La Land leading the way with 11 nominations. Here is the list of some of the big nominations and categories:

Best Film:

Arrival:-

I, Daniel Blake:-

Manchester By the Sea:-

La La Land: –

Moonlight: –

Prediction? While all have been strongly recommended by critics there is one film that has stood out: La La Land. It will probably do well at the BAFTA’s and puts musicals back into the spotlight on the big screen.

Best British Film:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:-

American Honey: –

Denial: –

I,Daniel Blake

Notes on Blindness

Prediction? As much as it would be great for the award to go to Fantastic Beasts, it is perhaps too ‘mainstream’ in comparison to many of the other films nominated. So it will perhaps be given to I, Daniel Blake.

Best Animated Film:

Finding Dory:-

Kubo and the Two Strings:-

Moana:-

Zootropolis:-

Prediction? with two massive Disney films in the mix, plus Kubo and the Two Strings, this is an extremely difficult category to predict. Personally I hope it goes to Zootropolis for its sense of humour, brilliant characters and imaginative story.

Best Actor:

Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)
Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
Jake Gyllenhaal (Nocturnal Animals)
Ryan Gosling (La La Land)
Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)

Prediction? Given that he has just won a Golden Globe award for his performance in La La Land, Ryan Gosling looks set on course to win another prestigious award for his role in this musical.

Best Actress:

Amy Adams (Arrival)
Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train)
Emma Stone (La La Land)
Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)

Prediction? Emma Stone seems another dead cert for this category, but does face tough competition in the form of Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep – delivering very different performances.

Best Supporting Actor:

Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals)
Dev Patel (Lion)
Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins)
Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)
Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

Prediction? I find myself backing Dev Patel or Mahershala Ali for this award both equally worthy for the award.

Best Supporting Actress:

Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake)
Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)
Naomie Harris (Moonlight)
Nicole Kidman (Lion)
Viola Davis (Fences)

Prediction? Having seen an early screening of Fences, Viola Davis delivers a memorable and powerful performance opposite Denzel Washington. It is a film worth watching when it is released in UK cinemas next month.

Best Costume Design:

Allied
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Florence Foster Jenkins
Jackie
La La Land

Prediction? the power of an excellent costume can not be underestimated, but having seen glimpses of the costumes for La La Land in the trailer which look beautiful, I have to back the musical once again.
