It has been announced that a brand new musical based on the life of singer Cilla Black will be brought to the stage by Bill Kenwright and Laurie Mansfield.
Cilla’s son Robert Willis will be the Executive Producer on the musical based on Jeff Pope’s BAFTA winning mini television series, which starred Sheridan Smith as the young Cilla Black.
The story will follow the life of one ordinary Liverpudlian teenage girl Priscilla White and her rise to fame and the many highs and lows that she experienced on her way to the top. By the age of 25 she was recognised as singer Cilla Black, going on to become a national treasure as a presenter as well having hosted television series’ including Blind Date and Surprise Surprise.
It was announced that open auditions will be held by producers for the touring production to find their Cilla – just as Cilla Black herself was discovered.
The musical will feature many of the singer’s greatest and best loved songs such as Anyone Who Had a Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me as well as number of other memorable songs including the Beatles’ Twist and Shout, and American influences like California Dreamin by The Mamas and The Papas.
Opening at the Liverpool Empire on the 7th September, the musical will then visit: Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Southampton, Birmingham, Blackpool, Cardiff, Wimbledon, Stoke and Manchester – with further dates to be announced.
