As the new live action film prepares to be released in cinemas, Love London Love Culture has listened to the film’s deluxe soundtrack…
The film is already been under fire from fans of the original film for Emma Watson being cast as Belle to Ariana Grande and John Legend’s version of the title track – but having now listened to the soundtrack, I can’t help but feel that this is perhaps is slightly unfair.
Judging by the soundtrack, there is still much to appreciate – not least Alan Menken’s beautiful score for the new songs as well as the freshness of the original songs that feel more modern but no less elegant.
There are also plenty of vocals to be enjoyed on the album – not least (and I realise it could be controversial) Emma Watson’s, who sounds really natural and charming with plenty of personality in her voice to create a new interpretation on songs such as ‘Belle’ and ‘Something There’. For those protesting, Belle is supposed to be a simple French girl and the occasional unpolished vocals that Watson provides actually works in her favour, making it seem even more believable.
A pleasant surprise is Luke Evans, who provides surprisingly strong performance during ‘Gaston’ that when combined with Josh Gad’s comical moments during the song brings joy and a smile to the listeners face.
The only version of the original song that I’m not entirely keen on is Emma Thompson’s rendition of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ – which doesn’t entirely work being sung in a slightly cockney accent and removes some of the softness of the lyrics sadly.
There are also some nice editions to the film such as ‘How Does a Moment Last Forever’ and ‘Days in the Sun’ which might be short – but they are sweetly genuine and could have perhaps been extended slightly.
On this special edition of the soundtrack, it is lovely to hear Alan Menken’s demos for the new songs in the film, allowing the listener to hear how they were developed. Performing with ease and elegance, it is clear a lot of thought went into them to ensure that they fitted with the original music perfectly while adding another layer to the story.
Overall, even if the film itself might be extremely close to the original it is refreshing to hear the new and up to date versions of the classic songs many of us grew up with to suit a new audience.
