BAFTA winning director Joe Wright directs this new production of Bertolt Brecht’s Life of Galileo, playing at the Young Vic Theatre from the 6th May.
The casting for the new production is set to include Brendan Cowell as the title role, Billy Howle as Andrea, Paul Hunter as Sagredo and Anjana Vasan as Virginia.
The full company also includes Ayesha Antoine, Jason Barnett, Joshua James, Bettrys Jones, Alex Murdoch, Brian Pettifer and Sarah Wright.
Brendan Cowell returns to the Young Vic following his performance in the hit production of Yerma. His other stage credits include The Wild Duck (Barbican, UK tour, Vienna and Amsterdam tour); Once in Royal David’s City, Miss Julie (Belvoir, Sydney); The Dark Room (nominated for Best Actor at the Sydney Theatre Awards, Company B); True West, Dissident and Goes Without Saying (Sydney Theatre Company).
Meanwhile, the production sees Billy Howle making his Young Vic debut. His stage credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Little Mermaid (Bristol Old Vic) and Ghosts (Brooklyn Academy of Music).
Paul Hunter returns to the Young Vic having appeared in the theatre’s productions of g Animal Farm, The Water Engine and My Perfect Mind. His previous stage credits also includes The Little Match Girl, The Mystery Plays and Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare’s Globe).
Life of Galileo sees Anjana Vasan making her Young Vic debut. Her recent stage credits includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Shakespeare’s Globe); Image of an Unknown Young Woman (Gate Theatre); Dara, Behind the Beautiful Forevers (National Theatre) and Macbeth (Park Avenue Armory, New York City).
Galileo Galilei: father, hero, heretic. When a chance discovery leads to evidence of a seismic shift in scientific thinking, Galileo sparks a dangerous dispute with authority. To challenge the idea that the earth is the centre of the universe is to challenge the all-powerful Roman Catholic Church.
Brecht’s play has been translated by John Willett and directed by Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Anna Karenina). The production has been designed by Lizzie Clachan, with lighting by Jon Clark, sound by Tom Gibbons and projections by 59 Productions.
