The new UK tour of the musical will begin at the Wales Millennium Centre in August.
The cast for the new tour is set to include Norman Pace (ITV1’s The Hale and Pace Show) as Wilbur Turnblad, Matt Nixon (The Ladykillers, Around the World in 80 Days) as Edna Turnblad, Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You ), Layton Williams (RENT) as Seaweed.
Meanwhile, the company will also include Gina Murray (Chicago and Full Monty) as Velma Von Tussle with Jon Tsouras (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Crazy for You) once again playing Corny Collins; Edward Chitticks (On the Town, Mamma Mia) as Link Larkin; Aimee Moore as Amber Von Tussle; Annalise Liard-Bailey as Penny Pingleton and Monifa James as Little Inez. Rebecca Mendoza will make her professional debut as Tracy Turnblad.
It’s Baltimore 1962, where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.
Directed by Paul Kerryson and choreographed by Drew McOnie, Hairspray features music and lyrics by Academy Award, Tony and Emmy winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
The musical is based on the 1988 film of the same name which starred Divine and Ricki Lake. It first appeared on Broadway in 2002, going onto win eight Tony Awards and originally opened in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2007, winning four Olivier awards including Best New Musical.
The production will feature set and costume designs by takis, lighting by Philip Gladwell and sound by Ben Harrison.
