Winner of the sixth edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, a biannual award established in 2005 to champion women artists in the UK, this exhibition features Hart’s new large-scale installation titled Mamma Mia!

On display from the 12th July, the new installation is the result of a six month bespoke residency which started in June 2016 and was divided between three Italian cities: Milan, Todi and Faenza.

Mamma Mia! is the result of an investigation by the artist into pattern, from visual patterns to patterns of psychological behaviour. The work also looks at the design and rupture of pattern and the ruminations in between.

For this display, Hart presents a number of ceramic heads that suggests a dialogue between each other. Meanwhile, inside each head are a variety of patterns designed and hand painted by the artist, after she researched the designs and practice of the Italian tradition of maiolica.

Following its display at the Whitechapel Gallery, the exhibition will then travel to Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, from 15 October 2017, where it’ll be accompanied by the opening of Luisa Rabbia’s monographic exhibition, Love (15 October 2017 – 18 February 2018), to celebrate the Collection’s 10th anniversary.

Emma Hart: Mamma Mia! will be on display at the Whitechapel Gallery from the 12th July until the 3rd September. For more information visit: http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/emma-hart-mamma-mia/
