As the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra prepare to head off on tour, here is a guide to who they are…
Having formed in 1895, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is the sixth oldest orchestra in the United States. It is a company which prides itself on being able to experiment with music including commissioning and premiering new works as well as bringing to life well known pieces of music.
They were also the first orchestra to perform live on radio in 1921 and are based in the Cincinnati Music Hall, which is currently in its final stages of extensive restoration and renovation, due to be unveiled in a grand re-opening in October 2017.
Its musical history includes close ties to local communities in the state of Ohio and in 2016 the company released a live recorded album ‘Concertos for Orchestra’ featuring world premieres of seven innovative new works by contemporary composers
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra will launch their 2017 tour in venues across continental Europe and the UK, with performances at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival from the 25th August. The tour will also see them visiting Paris and Antwerp with their mixed programme featuring work by the likes of Bernstein, Brahms and Gershwin for example.
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s 2017 tour will also be the company’s first major European tour with Music Director Louis Langrée at the helm, who earlier this year agreed to extend his contract with with the orchestra until the 2021-22 season.
The company will be playing at this year’s BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, performing Bernstein’s Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront, Copland’s Lincoln Portrait and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
