NEWS: Royal Academy of Arts Announces 2018 Exhibition Programme

Exhibitions for 2018 include reuniting the art collection of Charles I, Grayson Perry’s Summer exhibition and a major exhibition examining oceanic art.

The programme, which marks the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy, will also include Tacita Dean’s exhibition exploring ‘landscape’ and  acclaimed architect Renzo Piano’s first survey in London for almost 30 years.

Opening the new exhibition programme will be From Life  opening to the public from the 11th December until the 11th March 2018. This exhibition will examine what impact making art from life has had on artists and will feature work by the likes of Johann Zoffany, Jeremy Deller, Cai Guo-Qiang, Michael Landy and  Jenny Saville.

Meanwhile, from the 27th January, the Royal Academy of Arts will reunite around 150 of the most important works from Charles I’s collection in Charles I: King and Collector.  This will be a rare opportunity to see many of the works the king acquired and commissioned during the course of his rein.

With dates yet to be announced, the Royal Academy will also present an exhibition devoted to the work of Tacita Dean in Landscape . This display will explore the genre of landscape in the broadest sense, with one highlight being a major new, experimental 35mm film mixing different places, geologies and seasons into a single cinematographic image.

Returning from the 12th June, the Royal Academy will present a special 250th anniversary edition of its Summer Exhibition  coordinated by Grayson Perry. The exhibition will once again provide new and established artists a chance to showcase their work.

The academy will present an exhibition devoted to the career of Renzo Piano  from the 15th September and will be the first annual architecture exhibition  in the new Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries. It will focus on a key selection of his work over the years and feature rarely seen drawings, models and signature full-scale maquettes.

Heading into November, Oceania  will focus on the art of  Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, encompassing the vast South Pacific region from New Guinea to Easter Island, Hawaii to New Zealand. As well as marking the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy, this exhibition also marks the year that  Captain James Cook set sail on his first expedition from Plymouth on the Endeavour.

The final exhibition to be announced  Klimt / Schiele Drawings from the Albertina Museum, Vienna which will be on display from the 4th November. This exhibition will mark the centenary of the deaths of Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) and Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918). It will focus on the importance of drawing in the relationship between Austria’s two most famous artists.
