This new landmark exhibition will explore how Michael Jackson has inspired some  of the leading names in contemporary art.

Curated by  Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, the exhibition will  open in the summer of 2018, to coincide with what would have been Michael Jackson’s 60th birthday (on August 29, 2018).

Following the exhibition’s run in London, the display will then travel to  The Grand Palais, Paris (November 2018 to February 2019), The Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn (March to July 2019) and Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland (August to November 2019).

The singer is widely recognised for his influence on music , music videos, dance, choreography and fashion, but now the National Portrait Gallery will explore the untold impact of the singer on contemporary art.

Michael Jackson: On the Wall will bring together the work of over 40 artists to celebrate the singer’s influence and will include work by Rita Ackerman, Dara Birnbaum, Candice Breitz, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Mark Flood, Isa Genzken, Maggi Hambling, David Hammons, Lyle Ashton Harris, Jonathan Horowitz, Gary Hume, Rashid Johnson, Isaac Julien, David LaChapelle, Louise Lawler, Klara Liden, Glenn Ligon, Paul McCarthy, Rodney McMillian, Dawn Mellor, Lorraine O’Grady, Catherine Opie, Yan Pei Ming, Grayson Perry, Paul Pfeiffer, Faith Ringgold, Donald Urquhart, Kehinde Wiley, Hank Willis Thomas, Andy Warhol and Jordan Wolfson, among many others.

Talking about the exhibition, Dr Nicholas Cullinan said: “Michael Jackson: On the Wall takes an entirely new and quite radical approach by exploring the cultural impact of a unique figure through contemporary art. All the artists included – despite coming from different generations and parts of the world, and employing a range of media – are fascinated by what Jackson represented and what he invented. It is rare that there is something new to say about someone so famous, but here that is the case. The exhibition breaks new ground for the National Portrait Gallery in its subject matter and the breadth and profile of the artists who have been invited to participate.”

Michael Jackson: On the Wall will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery from the 28th June 2018  until the 21st October 2018. For more information and to book tickets visit: http://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/michael-jackson-on-the-wall/exhibition
