Review Round Up: Grimly Handsome, Royal Court Theatre

Love London Love Culture rounds up the reviews of the Royal Court Theatre’s production of Grimly Handsome.

The Stage: *** ” It’s baffling. It’s borderline barmy. But it’s also kind of brilliant.”

The Times: ** “By the time the characters make a second transformation, into talking pandas, it’s not just weird, it’s weirdness squared, weirdness cubed.”

Financial Times: *** “The result is bizarre, a hallucinatory trip through the grubby, desolate margins of the city as mangled through popular culture and sprinkled with cheery festive songs.”

The Guardian: **** “It’s very neatly done, the fine trio of actors rising to the technical challenges of a piece that worms its way into the brain and send you scurrying out into the city blinking – and more attuned to what might lurk behind the bright, seductive lights.”

Broadway World: **** “Grimly Handsome is like nothing I have ever seen before, and it’s a great to experience a show like this every once in a while.”

Time Out: *** “Grimly Handsome is rattled off with such freewheeling panache that I don’t want to get bogged down in joyless overanalysis. It is a play of dark, even sinister ideas, but it doesn’t ask to be taken too seriously. This gleeful exercise in inventive strangeness is the Royal Court’s Christmas gift to us all.”

Exeunt Magazine: “Festive cheer remains in short supply but, if you find the phony sparkles and forced cheer of the season more disorientating than delightful, Grimly Handsomeis the Christmas story for you.”

The Upcoming: **** “It’s not hard to imagine something as wilfully weird and meandering as Grimly Handsome being divisive. But go with it and there’s a witty, self-aware, slightly noir-ish snapshot of the city’s violent peripheries – especially, predictably for women – encased in one of the most imaginative stagings produced this year.”

British Theatre Guide: “One must imagine that the creators of this work were keen to keep audience members on their toes and quite possibly baffled by the whole event. If that is the case, then they succeeded only too well. On the plus side, the staging is novel, the acting of high quality and the murder mystery intriguing if not always particularly inventive.”

Grimly Handsome continues to play at the Royal Court Theatre until the 23rd December. For more information visit:
