It has been announced that Cassie McFarlane and Adrian Hope’s play will be performed at the Jermyn Street Theatre as part of its Scandal Season.
A bar in Jamaica. The early 1960s. When womanizing, hell-raising film star Peter Finch meets Eletha Barrett, a charismatic island girl, they both get more than they bargained for. The relationship between Peter and Eletha scandalises Hollywood, and culminates in Finch’s Oscar-winning performance in Network.
A battle between the ‘isms and schisms’ of race and prejudice and the courage of love, Mad As Hell reveals for the first time how the backdrop to Finch’s iconic performance was as fiery as the role he played.
Directed by Cassie McFarlane, this world premiere production will star Stephen Hogan (Redwater, BBC; Transformers, The Last Knight, Paramount; Peer Gynt, National Theatre), Vanessa Donovan (forthcoming films include I Love London and The Marker) and Alexandra Mardell (Mine, The Courtyard theatre; Vera, ITV).
Talking about the play Cassie McFarlane said: “Like many Jamaicans, I have known the story of Peter and Eletha since childhood. I think it will speak to many people about Hollywood, about prejudice, and about mixed-race relationships. I am excited to be bringing their amazing story to life in Mad As Hell, and to direct its world premiere in the middle of the West End.”
The creative team for the production includes designs by Cherry Truluck, lighting design by Tim Mascall, sound design by David Beckham and choreography by Ryan Francois.
Mad as Hell will play at the Jermyn Street Theatre from the 7th to the 24th February. For more information and to book tickets visit: http://www.jermynstreettheatre.co.uk/show/mad-as-hell/
