As we fast approach towards February, here’s Love London Love Culture’s guide to some of the best theatre opening soon…
The Moor, Old Red Lion Theatre: the world premiere of Catherine Lucie’s play will take place at the theatre from the 6th February. Directed by Blythe Stewart, The Moor is a psychological thriller which explores what we are capable of when we are isolated and under pressure.
Bronagh has lived at the heart of the moor for as long as she can remember, but recently she has started having the same troubling dream. Are the voices trying to tell her something? When a boy vanishes, Bronagh has to tell someone what she suspects, entangling herself and her boyfriend in a murder investigation.
Dry Powder, Hampstead Theatre: now in previews, Sarah Burgess’ play examines the vision and the vilification of those shaping the economy. The production stars Hayley Atwell, Tom Riley and Aidan McArdle and is directed by Anna Ledwich. Dry Powder officially opens on the 1st February.
Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Rose Theatre: playing for a limited time in Kingston before embarking on a tour. The production stars Phil Daniels as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in this new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic gothic thriller. The production will play at the theatre from the 9th to the 17th February.
Long Day’s Journey into Night, Wyndham’s Theatre: now in previews, this West End transfer stars Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville, who are reprising their roles from the Bristol Old Vic run. It officially opens on the 6th February.
The Tyrones’ summer home, August 1912. Haunted by the past but unable to face the truth of the present, the Tyrones and their two sons test the bonds of a family caught in a cycle of love and resentment. As day turns to night and the family indulge in their vices, the truth unravels leaving behind a quartet of ruined lives.
Angry, Southwark Theatre: February will also see the world premiere of Philip Ridley’s collection of of six gender-neutral monologues on subjects as diverse as refugees, millennial anger, and interstellar travel. Each monologue will be performed by Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Olivier award nominated Tyrone Huntley (Jesus Christ Superstar).
Frozen, Theatre Royal Haymarket: opening for previews on the 9th February before officially opening on the 21st February, Suranne Jones stars in this psychological thriller about a mother whose child goes missing. The production is directed by Jonathan Munby and will play for a strictly limited 12 week run.
Summer and Smoke, Almeida Theatre: opening for previews from the 24th February, Rebecca Frecknall brings Tennessee Williams’ story of love, loneliness and self-destruction to the stage for a limited run.
