NEWS: Caroline O’Connor to Star in The Rink

The renowned Broadway, West End and film actress will star as Anna in the Southwark Playhouse’s upcoming production of The Rink.

The actress, who is currently starring as Countess Lily in the Broadway musical Anastasia, joins the first London revival of Kander and Ebb’s musical in 20 years. She is best known for playing Nini in Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning film Moulin Rouge as well as Velma Kelly in Chicago on Broadway and in Australia and Mabel Normand in Mack and Mabel in the West End, for which she received a 1996 Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. 

Further casting for the production has yet to be confirmed.

Directed for this revival by  Adam Lenson, The Rink originally premiered on Broadway on 9 February 1984, starring Chita Rivera as Anna and Liza Minelli as Angel. The show then premiered in London at the Cambridge Theatre on the 17th February 1988, starring Josephine Blake and Diane Langton.

The Rink features a book by Terrence McNally as well as music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. This revival will feature choreography by Fabian Aloise and musical direction by Joe Bunker.

Anna, an Italian housewife who runs a roller-skating rink on the Eastern coast of America, is about to sell it to developers until her estranged daughter, Angel, returns after a long absence, hoping to save the rink and patch things up with her mother.
