There is already controversy surrounding the film given Johnny Depp’s involvement but this trailer has also angered some fans – here’s what Love London Love Culture thinks of this first trailer….
This second instalment in the spin-ff from the Harry Potter films is not due to arrive in cinemas until November, but now the first trailer has been released that offers all sorts of hints of what direction the film and the rest of the series will take.
Of course, already people are angry at Johnny Depp’s continued involvement in the film given allegations in his personal life – but the trailer has also offered some other unexpected controversy involving the apparition of several characters into Hogwarts which as Hermione said in the original series is impossible to do. So why is it possible?Unfortunately, it is impossible to fully speculate the reasons so no answer can be given until the film’s release later this year.
Aside from this, the rest of the trailer seems to offer plenty of action, adventure and magic for all of the characters – showing us the welcome return of Eddie Redmayne as Newt, Dan Fogler as Jacob, Katherine Waterston as Tina and Alison Sudol as the adorable Queenie. But the trailer also sees the debut of Jude Law in the cast, playing a young Albus Dumbledore – an interesting casting choice that will be interesting to see how he makes his mark on the character played for so long by Michael Gambon.
As for the plot, it is still unclear exactly what direction the film will take and Grindelwald’s part in it all as there is no strong glimpse what occurs in the film, with only brief flashes of action to get the audience intrigued.
Overall, it seems that having now properly introduced the new characters from the first film, The Crimes of Grindelwald will certainly pay closer attention to the plot than the first (which while good overall, felt as though it meandered slightly) and feature plenty of magical CGI that audiences have come to expect from the wizarding world. The trailer certainly excites potential audiences.
