Tiger Lillies spoke to Love London Love Culture’s Emma Clarendon about their upcoming show Devil’s Fairground , playing at the Wilton’s Music Hall from the 15th May. 

Thanks so much for talking to Love London Love Culture. Could you tell me a bit more about the show please? The show is called The Devil’s Fairground and it’s all based around the time that I spent in Prague in the early 1990s. It was before tourism really took off there and there were all kinds of incredible people and unique characters coming from all over the world, who were staying in squats in the city centre. The show is about that time and focuses on the era just after the Velvet Revolution, with references to the Soviet Union and communism and songs about drug abuse and alcohol abuse.

What can audiences expect from the performance? It’s an emotional rollercoaster ride that will make people feel uncomfortable, but laugh and think too I hope.

Do you have a favourite moment in the show? I sing a version of ‘Is That All There is’ which is based on writings by Thomas Mann in his story Disillusionment and was a famous song by Peggy Lee in 1969. Other people have recorded the song since but I do quite a dark version of the piece.

How would you like audiences to leave the show feeling? If you enjoy dark humour with a twisted edge to it then this is the show for you. If you enjoy optimistic popular music then this isn’t really going to be your thing. It’s a provocative show.

How would you describe the show to people thinking about coming along? This show isn’t for everyone, but if you enjoy being challenged and taken on a journey then, hopefully, it’s something you’d enjoy.
