Love London Love Culture’s Emma Clarendon spoke to Adam about his show There But For The Grace of God (Go I) which plays at the Soho Theatre from the 6th to the 8th August.
What can audiences expect from There But For The Grace of God (Go I)? It’s a True Crime, semi-autographical solo show, that is both deeply personal and universally relatable. It’s ultimately about parenting and being parented, which most people have had some experience of.
Was it difficult to create and write the show? It was difficult in the sense that I never really wanted to talk about myself, which is sort of necessary when you’re making an autobiographical work. Once I realised that I had to be honest about my own life in order for the audience to reflect on their own, it became easier. My family was also going through some difficult changes when I was writing the show, so I had to make a decision whether to carry on doing it. In order to maintain the pieces honesty, I had to keep changing the script to keep up with what was happening. Or not make it. I’m glad I did…
What do you feel that you have learnt from creating There But For The Grace of God (Go I)? I’m closer to my father than I’ve ever been. I’ve also learned that it’s never easy making theatre. You spend most of your time broke, worried and exhausted. But somehow, it’s worth it. And you’re not going down a Mine, so it could be worse.
How excited are you about bringing the show to London? To be presenting my own work at Soho Theatre alongside people that I really admire is so exciting. It’s such a great venue a great spot to hang out!
What do you hope that audiences will take away from the show? I just hope they go away feeling like they’ve had a great night at the theatre. I hope they’ve laughed, cried, and that they have the space to mediate on some difficult things in a safe environment. I know they will be able to take away a totally unique experience!
