Ahead of its Edinburgh Festival Fringe run, Ethereal Theatre brought its production to the Cockpit Theatre in London.
From the minute you walk into the dark theatre you are transported to Fleet Street and the Ethereal’s vision of hell by the actors who are already in character. The show is dark but with some humorous overtones and some real pathos and empathy for Sweeney.
Stand out performances were Ciara Waterfield as Mrs Lovett and Anna Tammela as the Beggar Woman. We were amazed to discover how young the principals were. The awkwardness of Jack Davies as Sweeney really gave the character a different feel. We loved how the ensemble got themselves amongst the audience, making us feel like we were really there. The band is extremely competent and the costumes and lighting innovative. Coming out onto the London streets after the matinee we felt the music and emotions for many hours afterwards.
Next up is a three week run at the Edinburgh Fringe and fringe-goers are in for a real treat.
