What can you tell me about your new show? The Thinking Drinker Pub Crawl is whistle stop tour through the history of great pubs and bars, from Wild West saloon, to Victorian gin palace, beach bar and great British pub. The show is packed with fun facts, great gags weird costumes and five free drinks. Yep, we give every member of the audiences in our show five free drinks.

How did the concept for the show come about? We’ve been doing the Thinking Drinkers shows for the last 8 years and we’ve visited stories around the history and global influences and drink, but we’ve not looked closely at drinking establishments before. We spend a lot of time in pubs and bars, so it proved an easy one to research. We were also motivated by statistical evidence that pubs are closing at an alarming rate – as many as 19 are shutting each week and based on the numbers of pubs we have in the UK, if that continues, there could be no pubs left by 2075. We love the pub, so we can’t have that. So we thought as well as some comedy, some interesting facts about drinks, and of course the FIVE FREE DRINKS we give every audience member, we could also use this show to remind audiences how great pubs are and   even as a campaign to save our pubs.

Did you have to do a lot of research to help create the show? Indeed we have, we’ve been lucky enough so spend nearly two decades writing about alcohol and visiting the best bars and pubs around the world, all of which has led to this important moment.

Have you learnt anything that particularly fascinated you about the topic? Crisps were invented in an American saloon bar in the 19th century. Muslims perfected distillation in the 9th century – in fact the scientist we credit with the alembic still was called Gerber and wrote down the method for his distillation in an almost indecipherable code, and from the Gerber, we get the word ‘gibberish’. Jesus was a beer drinker, not wine, there’s evidence to prove as much, we can’t really get into it here. But there’s loads of stuff, our shows are full of this sort of pub ammo.

What do you hope audiences will take away from the show? A renewed respect for our pubs and a love of great drink. We have some amazing free drinks in the show – Diplomatico Rum, Ketel One Vodka, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Four Pillars Gin and Lagunitas beer, it’s all really great stuff and we really want people to go out and explore quality drinks. Pay a bit more for the alcohol and drink it in a more discerning fashion – indeed follow our mantra: ‘Drink less, Drink Better’.
