As the hugely successful recent production of Funny Girl starring Sheridan Smith is screened in cinemas today (24th October), here’s a taste of what audiences can expect…
Released in cinemas nationwide by Trafalgar Releasing, Michael Mayer’s production was filmed by Digital Theatre during the final week of the production’s run at the Manchester Palace Theatre when it toured the UK.
The production starring Sheridan Smith as Fanny and Darius Campbell as Nick Arnstein, originally played at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2015, then transferring to the Savoy Theatre in 2016 and embarked on a UK tour last year.
As well as Smith and Campbell, this cinema release recording of the musical will also feature Nigel Barber (Florenz Ziegfeld), Zoë Ann Bown (Mrs. Meeker), Martin Callaghan (Mr. Keeney), Jennifer Harding (Emma), Rachel Izen (Mrs Brice), Joshua Lay (Eddie) and Myra Sands (Mrs. Strakosh); with Rhianne Alleyne, Kit Benjamin, Lloyd Davies, Flora Dawson, Joseph Dockree, Abigayle Honeywill, Brontë Lavine, David Mcintosh, Peter Nash, Gillian Parkhouse, Tom Partridge, Nova Skipp, Alexandra Waite-Roberts, Sam Wingfield and Alexandra Wright.
Based on the true life story of Fanny Brice, the musical features songs such as ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’, ‘People’ and ‘You are Woman, I am Man’. Jule Styne, Isobel Lennart and Bob Merrill’s musical originally appeared in cinemas in a film version starring Barbra Streisand in 1968.
