Interview With…Lucie Jones

The singer and actress spoke to Emma Clarendon about starring in the London Musical Theatre Orchestra’s upcoming concert production of Howard Goodall’s musical Girlfriends.

Headshot - Lucie Jones (2)

Hi Lucie, thanks for talking to me. What can audiences expect from ‘Girlfriends’?  Hello! Pleasure is all mine. Girlfriends is a truly important and inspiring piece about the women involved in the war. Without these women the history of our country and actually the world would quite literally be a different story. Expect to hear some stunning music sung by an incredible powerhouse cast that I am pinching myself to be a part of every day at rehearsals.

Were you familiar with the musical before becoming involved with this concert performance?  I wasn’t! I have been a fan of Howard for a number of years and have auditioned for his work before. There is currently no cast recording out there of this piece. Until now!

So far have you a favourite song that you get to sing?  I honestly can’t choose. There are some beautiful tender moments that I love. Then the parts of the score where all the women stand and sing in harmony is so powerful I have been moved to tears. It’s an amazing thing!

It is such a great cast lined up – how has it been working alongside them all?  These people are all people I have looked up to and seen in productions before. We have some of the biggest hitters in the industry in this cast and it shows in the rehearsal room. Plus I get to play opposite my real life bestie (Lauren Samuels) so it’s a total joy.

If people are thinking about coming along – what reason would you give them to book a ticket?  Oh you simply must! Don’t ever hesitate to hear a musical played as it was intended- with a full orchestra with a throng of great singer/ actors at the helm. The score is stunning and it’s a brand new version of the show. Being there when the cast recording is made… that’s pretty cool!

The London Musical Theatre Orchestra will perform Girlfriends at the Bishopsgate Institute on the 2nd and 3rd November. For more information visit: http://www.lmto.org/whats-on/girlfriends2018/
