Danielle chatted to Love London Love Culture’s Emma Clarendon about starring in Striking 12 at the Union Theatre.
Hi Danielle, thanks for taking the time to talk to me. What can audiences expect from this production of Striking 12? They can expect to see something new that isn’t your typical Christmas show! It’s inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, The Little March Girl, but it’s a really modern take on it. It is so different, but in a great way. Also the cast are so talented, playing instruments as well as the characters.
Were you familiar with the musical before agreeing to take part in this production? No, but so surprised that people don’t know about it! The music really is great – it’s a pop score, it has you toe-tapping one minute, and nearly crying the next. And as I said before, the story is so relatable – I’m so excited to share our version of it.
What were your first impressions of Striking 12? My first impressions were what a beautiful story. It really captures how some people feel around the festive period. Declan’s character, Brendan, goes on a real journey, and I think audiences will be able to relate to the story. He is feeling lost at the start of the show, and it is refreshing to see that different angle on the festive experience, which I really enjoyed.
Why would you say it makes for a great Christmas show? As cheesy as it sounds, it is actually a true reminder of the meaning of Christmas, and it reminds us to remember those that may not necessarily have a lot at this time of year. The three main characters we meet are Brendan, a Seasonal Affective Disorder Light Bulb Seller and of course The Little Match Girl. They each have different journey and I think that is what makes it a special show.
How would you describe the show for those who aren’t familiar with the musical? It will take you on a musical emotional journey. Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Match Girl is blended with the story of a modern man called Brendan, and it adds up to pack a real punch.
Have you a favourite moment or song in the show? All the songs are great! But I think my favourite song is ‘Wonderful’ and Bronté sings it beautifully.
What was it in particular that made you want to be involved with this production? I can’t think of a better way to spend the Christmas period than doing such a wonderful festive show with a wonderful group of people! We’re having so much fun, and can’t wait to show audiences what we’ve been working on.
