Review Round Up: Dick Whittington, Lyric Hammersmith

Love London Love Culture rounds up the reviews for the Lyric Hammersmith’s 10th Anniversary pantomime.

Dick Whittington

WhatsonStage: ***** “Director Christian has produced a show which feels like a celebration of all that’s good about London and its citizens.”

The Upcoming: ***** “Dick Whittington makes for a joyous and entertaining evening of escapism. The high energy is sustained throughout, allowing for a solid pace and no moments of flatness and, as with all good pantomime, both young and old will be entertained.”

The Telegraph: *** “It flags at times, could do with a bit more craft and cleverness, but the requisite gusto is present.”

The Stage: **** “a real sense of warmth and affection for both London and for pantomime’s inclusivity, for its power to enchant, unite and uplift an audience at the end of a turbulent year.”

Evening Standard: *** “Writers Jude Christian, who also directs, and Cariad Lloyd manage to make the whole enterprise feel both perfunctory and never-ending: any attempt at narrative is almost entirely jettisoned in the second half.”

Exeunt Magazine: “At points, the softly political humour is a bit pat-on-the-back cringe worthy, with most of the Brexit-related gags just sounding faintly smug rather than genuinely funny. But the overall ‘message’ (this is, it’s fair to say, a panto with a ‘message’) is enough to thaw Scrooge’s heart.”

British **** “Dick Whittington looks and sounds like million dollars and, using the attention and involvement of the young audience as a yardstick, along with the raucous knowing laughter of the adults, this show is a winner.”

British Theatre Guide: “Yet again, the Lyric has produced a pantomime fit for the 21st century full of vibrancy and heart.”

Metro: *** “There is lovely hip hop ensemble work and the general pro inclusivity vibe is cheering, but a panto’s heart lies in its essential elements — the set routines, the stock characters — and this one’s just isn’t in it.”

The Times: **** “Jude Christian and Cariad Lloyd’s show gives us what we want — just not always how we expect it. Dick Whittington is one of the most entertaining festive hotchpotches this Hammersmith theatre has offered since it started presenting them in 2009.”

Dick Whittington continues to play at the Lyric Hammersmith until the 6th January 2019. For more information visit:
