The gallery’s first exhibition of 2019 will be the first exhibition outside of Norway to be devoted to Harald Sohlberg.
On display from February 2019, the Dulwich Picture Gallery’s new exhibition will celebrate the work of Harold Sohlberg, coinciding with the 150th anniversary since his birth.
Bringing together over ninety pieces of his work, the exhibition is set to concentrate on the importance of of colour and symbolism in his art as well as his unwavering passion for the Nordic landscape.
Arranged chronologically, the display will trace the duration of Sohlberg’s artistic career, from his earliest production as a twenty-year-old in 1889 through to the last year of his life, and will reveal influences such as Norwegian Naturalism and Neo-romanticism.
Particular highlights of the exhibition will include Fisherman’s Cottage (1906) on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago, and his most ambitious work, widely considered to be the ‘national painting of Norway’, Winter Night in the Mountains (1914), of which he created many studies and variations.
Harald Sohlberg: Painting Norway will begin with two self-portraits, to consider the artist’s identity and early development; in particular, how he found his subject in the Norwegian landscape. The exhibition will also introduce those visiting to Sohlberg’s celebration of the rural landscapes of Norway, providing a snapshot of his time.
The exhibition is guest curated by Kathleen Soriano, independent curator, author, broadcaster, and expert judge of Sky Arts ‘Artist of the Year’. Speaking of the exhibition, she said: ““Harald Sohlberg’s acutely observed Norwegian landscapes will bring intense colour and drama, as well as mood and symbolism to Dulwich Picture Gallery. Celebrating the distinctive style of his painting, the exhibition champions this artist whose work captures both a sense of the everyday and an elegiac, mystical spirituality.”
Harald Sohlberh: Painting Norway will be on display at the Dulwich Picture Gallery from the 13th February until the 2nd June. For more information visit: https://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/2019/february/harald-sohlberg-painting-norway/
