The star of the National Theatre’s Husbands and Sons completes the casting for D.H. Lawrence’s The Daughter-in-Law at the Arcola Theatre from the 10th January.

Matthew Barker

Jack Gamble’s production returns to the Arcola Theatre following a run at the theatre in May this year, receiving three Off West End award nominations.

As well as Matthew Barker, the production is set to include Tessa Bell-Briggs, Matthew Biddulph, Ellie Nunn and Veronica Roberts.

In Nottinghamshire, 1912, trouble is brewing in the mines – and simmering closer to home. When Mrs Gascoyne discovers an explosive secret about her newly-married son, it risks the hard-earned security of her daughter-in-law. But Minnie Gascoyne isn’t going to settle without a fight.

Talking about joining the cast Matthew Barker said: “I am incredibly excited to be joining such a fantastic company, particularly as it’s a chance for us all to revisit such a brilliant piece of writing that was so ahead of its time. It’s a fascinating play and I’m absolutely made up to be part of it, especially somewhere as exciting as the Arcola.”

As well as being directed by Jack Gamble, the production’s creative team includes design by Louie Whitemore, lighting design by Geoff Hense and sound design by Dinah Mullen.

Director Jack Gamble said: “D H Lawrence is best known as a novelist, but he was also an extraordinary playwright. I’m thrilled that more people will be able to see The Daughter-in-Law in its new home, and to welcome Matthew Barker to our company.”

The Daughter-in-Law will play at the Arcola Theatre from the 10th January until the 2nd February. For more information visit: https://www.arcolatheatre.com/event/the-daughter-in-law/
