Love London Love Culture’s Film Picks for 2019

With plenty of films to look forward to next year, here is LLLC’s top ten favourite films to look out for…

  1. Toy Story 4 : all our favourite toys are back for a brand new adventure – heading to our cinema screens next Summer. Is it one of the most anticipated films of 2019? Of course it is!

2. Colette: Keira Knightly stars as the French writer in Wash Westmoreland’s new biographical film. The film co-stars Dominic West, Eleanor Tomlinson and Denise Gough. Judging by the trailer alone it looks like a lavish and ultimately passionate film with some stellar performances – can’t wait to see what it is like!

3. Mary Queen of Scots: this new film to focus on the story of the friendship but ultimately the rivalry between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots is based on John Guy’s biography Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart. A sweeping drama set in two different countries with two very different leaders, looks set to be one of the strongest films to be released in 2019 – particularly with Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie in the two leading roles.

4. Downton Abbey: there is no denying the global appeal of Downton Abbey as a television series – the global success that it was. Can it transform its appeal to cinema audiences as well? Find out next Autumn…

5. Rocketman: following on from the immense success of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ comes this new biographical film charting the life and career of Elton John, starring Taron Egerton as the singer himself.

6. Aladdin: this new live action version of the beloved 1992 classic is set to hit cinema screens in May 2019 starring Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud and Marwen Kenzari.

7. The Lion King: fast on the heels of Aladdin being released, the 25th July 2019 will see this live action remake of The Lion King released. It is directed by  Jon Favreau who also directed The Jungle Book remake.

8. Dumbo: on March 29th, Tim Burton’s reimagining of Dumbo comes to the big screen. The cast includes Eva Green, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton and Danny De Vito.

9. Stan and Ollie: John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan star in Jon S. Baird’s film based on the lives of the comedy double act Laurel and Hardy. Having premiered at the BFI London film festival in October, it will be released in UK cinemas on the 11th January.

10. Cats: based on the musical featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber which was of course based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, this will be director Tom Hooper’s second musical film. It will feature an all-star cast including Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson.
