Love London Love Culture’s Film Picks: January 2019

2019 is certainly off to a flying start in terms of film releases with  these five very different stories…

The Favourite: even from just watching this trailer, this new film from Yorgos Lanthimos seems a lively but bizarre affair. A tale of a battle for control over Queen Anne by two extraordinarily different women, it is certain to be plenty of fun and filled (hopefully) with a sharply witty script delivered to perfection by the strong female cast.

Vice: this biographical film about Dick Cheney has been written and directed by Adam McKay. It stars Christian Bale as the Vice President Dick Cheney as he plans on becoming the most powerful Vice President to ever exist.

Stan & Ollie: another biographical film to hit the big screens this month, Stan & Ollie follows the famous comedy duo as they travel across the UK performing in music halls, which soon puts pressure on their friendship and professional relationship. LLLC is particularly curious to see how Steve Coogan and John C.Reilly approach the characters of this beloved comedy duo.

Colette: with plenty of female stories taking centre stage in film releases this month, this is certainly one that LLLC is most interested in watching. Starring Keira Knightly as the French novelist, the film focuses on her early career as a writer in which her husband Willy encourages her to write novels. But when she decides she wants to be recognised for her work, Willy refuses. Already it has received positive reviews from critics – and is high on LLLC’s must see list!

Mary Queen of Scots: it is difficult to resist a period drama – particularly when it is set to star two incredibly strong actresses Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie in the leading roles. While the outcome of the story is well known, it is the way in which director Josie Rourke will capture the story that intrigues. As someone who particularly loves Tudor history – the release of this is highly anticipated!
