The musical will embark on a brand new UK to celebrate twenty years on the London stage.
The Walt Disney Company UK and Ireland has confirmed that the award-winning musical will embark on its second UK and Ireland tour, opening in Bristol in September before moving to Edinburgh in December. Tickets for the Bristol run will go on sale in February 2019 and for the Edinburgh run in March 2019. Patrons can sign up for priority access to tickets from the official The Lion King website.
This new UK tour coincides with The Lion King celebrating twenty years at London’s Lyceum Theatre, which has welcomed audiences since its premiere Tuesday 19th October 1999. It is currently the sixth longest running West End musical of all time.
As well as the newly announced tour, the musical will celebrate its 20th anniversary in London with a gala performance, performances at live events and on TV, and celebrate its many charity and outreach partnerships.
Based on the classic animated film, Disney’s The Lion King tells the story of young Simba’s epic adventures as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and becoming king.
As well as directing the production, Julie Taymor also helped to co-design the puppets with Michael Curry and costume design. Scenic design is by British designer Richard Hudson, lighting is by Donald Holder and choreography by Garth Fagan. The book was adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay. The musical also features music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice and additional music and lyrics by Lebo M.
The Lion King continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre.
