Ethan chatted to LLLC’s Emma Clarendon about Massaoke’s upcoming A Massaoke Night at the Musicals event, taking place at KOKO this Friday.
Thanks so much for talking to me. What can we expect from ‘A Massaoke Night at the Musicals’? Expect a lot of fun for starters! 1500 people singing their hearts out together to the greatest musicals songs from stage and screen – led by a brilliant live band and giant lyrics.
Do you take requests for songs or is it structured? There is such a range of amazing musicals songs and we want to cover as many as we can – from the classics to new favourites – so we choose the songs carefully. Think The Greatest Showman to Grease via Phantom, Wicked, Disney and Mamma Mia! There’s definitely something for everyone.
What are you most looking forward to about the evening? Hearing the crowd belting out ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ from Grease is going to be really special. It’s a new favourite for me so I’ll be joining in at the top of my voice and overly dramatic arm gestures.
Do you think that putting the show on in London where theatre is so prominent makes it extra special? Absolutely. Celebrating the world of musicals just up the road from the West End itself in an iconic, velvety venue like KOKO is a dream come true. Don’t tell anyone but I’m welling up at the thought of it.
What makes the Massaoke band special to be a part of? You know that feeling you get when you and your best friends are belting out an anthem together at the end of a night-out? A Massaoke show is a like that – multiplied by a thousand. The crowd is the star of the show and to be part of creating that atmosphere and involved in all that fun, euphoria and happiness is a real privilege. I also love our sequinned outfits.
If people are thinking about coming along – why should they? For a huge, feel-good celebration of the music we love, where we sing and dance along like no-ones watching.
