The actress chatted to LLLC’s Emma Clarendon about her latest role in the UK premiere of Intra Muros at the Park Theatre.
Hi Summer, thanks so much for talking to me. For those who aren’t familiar with the play what is Intra Muros about? The play is set in a prison, following five people who are all searching for some answers for their lives.
What did you initially think of the play when you first read it? My initial reaction was one of quiet reflection. It made me want to understand more about how community and systems can let young people down in this day and age. All the characters are unhappy due to their lives unfolding in ways that are unexpected.
What was it that made you want to be involved with the production? My career has been quite a whirlwind of musical theatre with snatches of television and plays on tour here and there and being offered a play has been my dream now for a rather long time.
How have you found working on the production so far? Intimidated but privileged! The cast are stella being led by Ché Walker who could not be making it more fun! I’ve never felt so safe and respected in a rehearsal room which is a very welcome change. Also being at the Park Theatre is a joy. Everyone in the building is contributing to make it the perfect environment for creativity.
Could you tell me a little more about your character Alice? Without giving too much away, Alice is definitely a woman who knows how to get what she wants from people and will do whatever is required. The complexity of her psyche from events in her childhood, is going to be quite a challenge to play. The great thing is all the cast including myself play multiple roles so we get to explore lots of different neuroses and as an actor that’s the dream.
What can audiences expect from the production? With the help of some interesting and funky music from the wonder that is Rio Kai, expect to be amused, scared, shocked and moved by a piece highlighting that there are always two sides to every story.
