NEWS: Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah Announces 2020 Programme for Young Vic

Details have been released for the Young Vic Theatre’s 2020 programme.

The Young Vic’s 2020 season is set to open with Steff Smith’s reworking of Ibsen’s classic A Doll’s House in Nora: A Doll’s House , playing at the theatre from the 6th February 2020. This co-production with Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, is set to be directed by Elizabeth Freestone.

This will then be followed by the world premiere Orfeus: A House Music Opera, created by and set to star Nmon Ford as Orfeus. Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, this contemporary retelling of Ovid’s myth will play at the Young Vic from the 14th April 2020.

Meanwhile, the Young Vic will also be collaborating with LIFT for 2020, with a production of The Second Woman, an internationally-acclaimed 24-hour feat of endurance performance and live cinema in June.

This newly announced season will also Cush Jumbo making her Young Vic debut in Greg Hersov’s production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Hamlet, playing from the 6th July, while Academy Award-nominee Ruth Negga is set to take on the role of Portia in Portia Coughlan, Marina Carr’s play directed by Caroline Byrne.

The Young Vic also confirmed that it will be introducing a brand new strand of music and club nights in The Maria studio. Meanwhile, Taking Part, the Young Vic’s participation programme, announce a new season of work made for and with the local community including; 8196 Humans, a play created with young people from London’s travelling community; TWENTY TWENTY, a year-long project about the history and heritage of Lambeth and Southwark; a parallel production around Nora: A Doll’s House made with schools and young people;and Nobler in the Mind, exploring attitudes to mental health, inspired by the upcoming production of Hamlet.

Talking about news of the new programme Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah said: “My hope is that these plays and these players will do more than just entertain us, they will reflect and refract the times we are living in.”

Tickets for 2020 Main House shows go on sale to Friends of the Young Vic Tuesday 18th June, 12pm. Public booking opens Tuesday 25th June, 12pm.
