Ian McKellen’s one man show which has been playing in theatres across the UK in celebration of his 80th birthday and raising money for theatre charities, will play in the West End for 80 dates from the 20th September.

The tour has so far raised over £1million for causes related to the venues it has visited and will pass £2million when it ends in Orkney in August. The total target for money to be raised by the end of the tour and West End run is £3million.

Directed by Sean Mathias, the show sees the actor doing a reading from Lord of the Rings as well as being filled with stories relating to his performances in Shakespeare productions. Tickets are on sale now, eighty tickets for each performance available for just £10.

Talking about the news, Ian McKellen said: “Taking this new show to eighty plus theatres around the country, has been a joyful birthday present to myself.  I’ve played mainly in theatres I knew well as a young theatregoer and actor.”

Ian McKellen on Stage will take place at the Harold Pinter Theatre from the 20th September until the 5th January 2020.
