It has been confirmed that Ryan Murphy will direct and produce a feature production of the Tony nominated musical for Netflix.

This new adaptation filmed for Netflix is set to star Meryl Streep as Dee Allen, Ariana Grande as Alyssa, James Corden as Barry Glickman, Awkwafina as Ms. Sheldon, Nicole Kidman as Angie Dickinson, Keegan-Michael Key as Principal Hawkins and Andrew Rannells as Trent Oliver. The role of Emma is yet to be confirmed.

The Tony Award nominated musical follows the story of Dee Dee Allen, a two-time Tony winner who teams with Barry Glickman in a flop musical about Eleanor Roosevelt. After disasterous reviews, they decide – along with Angie Dickinson and Trent Oliver – to champion a cause to restart their careers. They find one in Emma, a high school senior in Indiana who isn’t allowed to take her girlfriend to the prom.

The script for the musical is by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, with music and lyrics by Matthew Skylar and Beguelin. Murphy and the cast of the film will begin filming in December 2019.

The news of the film adaptation comes as The Prom recently announced its final Broadway performances will take place at the Longacre Theatre on the 11th August.
