Simon Evans is set to direct a new production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, which will play at the Trafalgar Studios from the 21st September.

It has been announced that Toby Stephens and Claire Skinner will lead the cast in Simon Evans’ production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, which will play at the Trafalgar Studios for a limited season from September.

Bri and Sheila have been struggling to care for their disabled 10-year old daughter Josephine ever since she was born. Nicknaming her “Joe Egg”, they lose themselves in fantasy games and black humour to help cope with the struggle of their daily reality.

Written by Peter Nichols in the 1960’s, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg was originally performed in 1967 at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland, before transferring to London’s West End in 1968. It then went onto Broadway, where it received four Tony Award nominations. It was last revived in London in 2001, starring Clive Owen and Victoria Hamilton, directed by Laurence Boswell.

Claire Skinner is best known for her roles in BBC’s Outnumbered as well as appearances in films such as Sleepy Hollow and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Her numerous stage credits include: Mrs Affleck, The Winter’s Tale, Othello, Blurred Lines and Invisible Friends for The National Theatre, Measure for Measure and The Blue Angel for RSC.

Toby Stephens starred as Gustav Graves in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day, Edward Fairfax Rochester in a BBC television adaptation of Jane Eyre and Captain Flint on the television series Black Sails. His theatre credits include Oslo, Private Lives (Chichester Festival Theatre and Gielgud Theatre); Danton’s Death (NT); The Real Thing (Old Vic); A Doll’s House (Donmar Warehouse) and  Betrayal(Donmar Warehouse).

Meanwhile, Director Simon Evans’s credits include St. Nicholas for the Donmar Warehouse, Dublin Festival and Goodman Theatre, Chicago, Killer Joe at Trafalgar Studios, The Best Man for Bill Kenwright Ltd, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and The Silence of the Sea for the Donmar Warehouse.
