First Impressions of…Little Women

This new film adaptation based on the classic novel features an impressive cast and is set to be released near Christmas.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel, it has to be said this is still a story that will gain a whole new readership if Greta Gerwig’s lavish and spirited looking film is anything to go by.

First off, there is an impressive wealth of talent in the cast who will most certainly offer strong performances. Emma Watson (Meg) and Saoirse Ronan (Jo) have both had equally diverse career choices up to now and it will be particularly interesting to see what they make of their characters. By having Meryl Streep in the cast, the film also guarantees strong supporting characters, to fully evoke the world in which the story is set effectively.

While essentially this is a strong period drama film, it is clear to see in this first trailer that Greya Gerwig’s film ensure striking parallels between what lives were like in the 1860’s and 2019 – in the idea that women certainly do not want to be held back in following their dreams and building their own lives on their own terms, despite what society says. Essentially, while there is a romantic flair to the story it also has a bit of a bite to it that makes it not an average period drama film.

Elsewhere, the costumes look suitably stylish but reflect the character’s individuality and personality as well, while the cinematography by Yorick Le Saux looks set to offer plenty of gorgeous scenes and Alexandre Desplat’s delicate score will compliment the story as well.

Overall, there is certainly plenty to be excited about in this latest adaptation that will hopefully effectively capture the spirit of the original story for those who love the book.

Little Women will be released in cinemas on the 26th December.
