We round up the reviews for the Lyric Hammersmith’s 2019 pantomime.
WhatsOnStage: **** “the west London venue has once more secured its standing as one of the fairest evenings in all the land.”
The Guardian: *** “For all the progressive values, happily ever after still seems to require a proposal of marriage. But if the tension between trad and woke is never wholly resolved, you’ll have (just) enough fun not to fret about it.”
The Stage: **** “The Lyric pantomime has long been one of the coolest seasonal shows in London. This year it’s also one of the most heartfelt and joyous.”
The Telegraph: ** “You know you’re in 2019 when you’re watching a pantomime in which Cinderella (Timmika Ramsey) is a plus-sized black woman with a talent for astrophysics; her reluctant Prince (Gabriel Fleary) is one of several characters who seem to be suffering from anxiety; and there’s a sweet little romantic sub plot involving Jodie Jacobs’s hearty, pinny-sporting Buttons and Lauren Samuels’s nervily insecure step-sister Popsy.”
Time Out: **** “If I was to be Madame Meanie (as the stepmother is re-named), I’d say it’s a little short on the big, raucous belly laughs, and the slapstick routines are a bit too reserved: why a glass of gunge when you could throw a bucketful? But aside from that, this is probably the closest you’re ever going to get to a sugarplum sweet panto spreading only the loveliest of lovely fairy dust.”
British Theatre.com: **** “When an audience gleefully sings along to “Shut Up And Dance” but moreover means it, the Lyric can be reassured that it’s pulled another Christmas cracker.”
Pocket Size Theatre: ** “This is barely recognisable as a traditional magical Cinderella but like all good Christmas shows has been tailored for the local audience with the “Lyric twist” and they seemed to enjoy the show even if left me hoping for better things in the weeks ahead.”
