Love London Love Culture’s Film Picks of 2020

Love London Love Culture selects some of the best films to look out for this year….

In the Heights: heading to cinema screens over the summer, this film adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s hit musical is certainly one of the most anticipated films to be released this year for musical theatre fans. With its diverse cast and celebration of friendships, family and community this is set to be one of the most uplifting films of the summer.

Mulan: cinema and Hollywood is certainly trying to up their game in terms of celebrating diversity more (although of course there is still a long way to go) and this action packed looking live version based on the animated classic is set to continue this change. There may be none of the classic songs, but it is set to be a film that spiritedly retells this story.

West Side Story: Steven Spielberg is set to reinvent this classic musical with its Rome and Juliet styled storyline, set for release later this year. The cast is set to include Rachel Zegler as Maria and Ansel Elgort as Tony – the two lovers at the centre of the story. The new adaptation has been written by Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner, with filming having been completed towards the end of 2019.

Emma: also this year is a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic story. The film is directed by Autumn de Wilde and is set to star Anna Taylor-Joy in the title role, Bill Nighy and Johnny Flynn. It is set to be released in cinemas in February.

Dolittle: Robert Downey Jr takes on the role of Doctor Dolittle in this new film adaptation, based on characters created by Hugh Lofting. Filled with plenty of animals and adventures, this looks set to be a major family favourite this year.

No Time to Die: heading to cinema screens this April, Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 is highly anticipated release this year – and judging by the trailer it looks like the delay in release has made it worth the wait.
