REVIEW: Lorna Dallas: Home Again, Stay at Home with Crazy Coqs

This warm and heartfelt performance from the West End star is filled with nostalgia and fabulous vocals.

Having first appeared in London in a revival of Jerome Kern’s Showboat, starring opposite Dame Cleo Laine, Lorna Dallas returned to London in 2018 to perform a warmly intimate show at the Crazy Coqs.

Filled with heartwarming antidotes and anecdotes, as well as some truly lovely renditions of songs such as Irving Berlin’s How Deep is the Ocean and Younger Than Springtime from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific, this was a show filled with nostalgia and received with great affection by the audience.

Given the fact that the space at Crazy Coqs is not the biggest, it should be admired that it was able to be filmed at all. The camera shots and angles all give a real sense of the intimacy of the space and the almost confidential nature of the performance that is happening in front of us.

Throughout it all, Lorna Dallas offers such a sincere performance, that the audience can’t help but be drawn in by her personality as well as the versatility of her voice. Her performance of songs such as As If We Never Said Goodbye which merges beautifully into Stephen Sondheim’s Back in Business.

It really is extraordinary the way in which Dallas uses her voice – whether it is an element of operatic or a softer and more lilting tone that gives the songs their soul to make the audience really sit up and pay attention. Her sense of joy of being up on the stage is infectious and adds an extra sense of pleasure from watching the show.

This is a show that is all about heart and emotion, with plenty of highlights not least her rendition of Ivor Novello’s Waltz of My Heart that is beautifully tinged with sadness, while her duet with pianist and collaborator Jason Carr You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow is wonderfully playful.

A real treat and delight to watch, particularly during a time when we don’t know when we will get to enjoy the space at Crazy Coqs. In the meantime, let Lorna Dallas charm you with her voice and personality in this delightful show.
